Chargers Upset Royals
The Camosun Chargers head back to the PACWEST gold medal game for the first time since 2010
The Camosun Chargers stunned the Douglas Royals on Friday night with a 71-63 victory and punched their ticket to the gold medal game at the PACWEST championship on Saturday.
Offensively the Chargers used the three-pointer as a dangerous weapon knocking down 11 of them. Aija Salvador was a key contributor hitting five-threes and tallied 17 points. Ella Goldschmid was equally lethal nailing three of five from behind the arch. She finished with a game high 19 points and gathered three rebounds, six assists and two steals and was named the player of the game. As a team they shot 37% from the field and 44% from three point land.
The Royals have been plagued by the Chargers all season. Including Friday night the Royals have lost just five times, three of which at the hands of the Chargers. They shot 41% from the field led by the player of the game Nanaya Miki who scored 16 points and collected 12 rebounds and three steals. The women’s player of the year Rachel Beauchamp was held in check with only 11 points and four boards.
Saturday the Chargers will play in their first gold medal game since 2010 when the lost to the UBC Okanagan Heat. They will face the Capilano Blues at 6:00pm who advanced after an exciting win over the VIU Mariners earlier in the day. The Royals will battle the Mariners for PACWEST bronze at 1:00pm.
