It was a tail of two halves as the women’s bracket opened at the 2017 PACWEST championship tournament with the VIU Mariners claiming a 73-64 victory.
The sixth seed Langara Falcons played outstanding in the first half and held a halftime lead of 43-38 getting contributions from the majority of their players and forced the Mariners into 14 first half turnovers.
However the Mariners showed why they are the defending PACWEST champions with a dominating third quarter outscoring the Falcons 24-9.
They were able to maintain their strong play in the fourth and secured the win.
Emily Clarke was named player of the game with 20 points while Kaitlyn Lafontaine chipped in with 18. Victoria Brown dropped eight points in the fourth quarter and finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
The Falcons were led by Coco Suave and her 16 points and Georgia Paterson dropped 12.
The Mariners will now face the Douglas College Royals in Friday’s semi-final at 1:00pm.
