Bronze Medal Game: #2 Douglas Royals vs. #4 Quest Kermodes
Kermodes upset Royals to capture Bronze medal
In the women’s bronze medal game of the 2016 PACWEST Basketball Provincial Championships, the #2 Douglas College Royals took on the #4 Quest Kermodes in a rematch of the 2014 and 2015 PACWEST final.
After an evenly matched first quarter, the Royals held a narrow two-point lead, 15-13 heading into the second. Quest’s Miriam Baumann continued to prove on both ends of the floor why she was a PACWEST first team all-star; totaling 9 points and 9 rebounds through 20 minutes of play. Going into the halftime break the game was all tied up at 30 each. PACWEST second team all-star Nanaya Miki was the leading scorer for the Royals with 12 points.
The intensity between the two teams picked up in the third, which saw the Kermodes pull away slightly to take a 44-42 advantage heading into the final quarter of play. Emily Lachenmayer was outstanding defensively for the Kermodes, hauling in boards and keeping the Royals from getting second chances.
In the final quarter of play, the Royals were able to regain the lead with two deep three-pointers from Simran Bir to put the Royals up 51-47. With just under five minutes to play PACWEST Rookie of the Year, Jordin Wilkinson (Quest) hit a long three to tie it up at 51. With one second on the shot clock and a minute left in the game, Baummann hit a fall away jumper to give the Kermodes a 55-53 lead. Miki got to the free throw line on the ensuing possession and converted both to tie it back up 55-55. The Kermodes got the ball back with 25 seconds left in the game. As the shot clock was winding down, Wilkinson hit a clutch three to put the Kermodes up 58-55 with 6.3 seconds left. Douglas couldn’t convert on the last possession and the Kermodes come away with the upset win, 60-55.
Player of the game Miriam Baumann led the Kermodes with 12 points, 14 rebounds and 7 assists. Other notable performers in the game include: Quest’s Lachenmayer (11 points, 8 rebounds) and Wilkinson (18 points) and for the Royal’s - Nanaya Miki (20 points).
The Kermodes capture a PACWEST Basketball Bronze medal and the Royals finish the season off in fourth place.
